How to Store Collectible Figures Safely for the Long Term
Moving house, clearing space, or building a storage archive? This guide covers safe packing materials, ideal conditions, and common mistakes that damage collectibles.
✨
Poor storage can cause more damage in one year than a decade of proper display. Here's how to do it right.
The Main Enemies of Stored Collectibles
UV light, humidity extremes, physical pressure, and chemical off-gassing from incorrect packaging materials.
Packing Materials: Use These
- Acid-free tissue paper — the gold standard. Breathes, no damaging acids
- Unbleached cotton cloth — excellent for heavier pieces
- Acid-free cardboard boxes — standard cardboard contains acids that migrate
- Silica gel sachets — 1–2 per box to control humidity
Packing Materials: Avoid These
- Bubble wrap — off-gasses plasticisers that yellow resin
- Newspaper — inks and acids transfer to surfaces
- Sealed plastic bags — trap moisture and chemical off-gas
- Polystyrene peanuts — can stick permanently to varnished surfaces
Ideal Storage Conditions
- Temperature: 15–20°C, stable — avoid garages, attics, sheds
- Humidity: 45–55% RH — below 40% cracks paint; above 65% causes mould
- Light: completely dark or no UV exposure
- Air: away from solvents, paint fumes, cleaning products
Step-by-Step Packing
- Clean the figure before storage
- Wrap in acid-free tissue paper
- Place in snug-fitting box with tissue padding — no movement when shaken
- Add a silica gel sachet
- Seal, label with contents and date
- Store in a climate-stable interior room, off the floor
