How to Clean a Glass Display Cabinet for Collectibles
Step-by-step guide to cleaning your glass display cabinet inside and out — without streaks, without disturbing your figures, and without damaging delicate finishes.
A clean display cabinet transforms a collection. Smudged glass and dusty shelves make even the finest figures look neglected. Here's how to clean your cabinet thoroughly without disrupting your collection or leaving streaks.
Cleaning Frequency
Glass exterior: monthly wipe-down. Interior shelves: every 3–4 months. Full strip-down and deep clean: once or twice a year.
What You'll Need
- Distilled water — prevents mineral streaks
- White vinegar (50/50 with distilled water for exterior glass)
- Microfibre cloths — at least 3
- Soft brush for shelf crevices
- Cotton buds for corners and hinges
Exterior Glass
Spray 50/50 distilled water and white vinegar onto a microfibre cloth (never directly onto glass — it seeps into joints). Wipe in one direction — top to bottom for vertical panels. Buff immediately with a dry cloth before the solution dries. Avoid ammonia-based glass cleaners — they damage wooden frames and cause long-term fogging.
Interior Shelves
Move figures to a soft-cloth-covered surface first. Use a barely-damp microfibre on glass shelves, a dry soft brush on wooden shelves. Allow to dry completely before returning figures.
Interior Glass Panels
Use the same 50/50 solution but very sparingly. Excess moisture in a sealed cabinet raises humidity and can affect your figures.
Anti-Streak Tips
- Always use distilled water — tap water leaves mineral deposits
- Clean in shade — sunlight dries solution before you can buff
- Two-cloth method always: one damp, one dry for buffing
- Change cloths regularly — a saturated cloth redistributes grime
Hinge and Latch Care
Clean hinges with a cotton bud dipped in a tiny amount of mineral oil. Cleans and lubricates simultaneously — eliminates squeaky doors.
