How to Clean Resin Figurines Without Damaging the Paint

The complete step-by-step guide to cleaning resin collectible figurines safely — removing dust, fingerprints, and grime without scratching or lifting the paintwork.

Resin figurines accumulate dust and fingerprints faster than almost any other collectible. The good news: cleaning them safely is straightforward if you follow a few simple rules. The bad news: the wrong approach can cause irreversible damage to the paintwork.

What You'll Need

  • A soft synthetic watercolour brush (size 8–12, flat or round)
  • Microfibre cloths — at least two
  • A small bowl of distilled or filtered water
  • Compressed air canister (optional, very useful)
  • Cotton buds for tight recesses

Step 1 — Dry Dusting First, Always

Never touch a dusty figure with a damp cloth. Dust particles act as abrasive grit and will micro-scratch the varnish layer. Start by removing loose dust dry:

  • Use a soft brush in short, light strokes — always brush downward and away from the figure
  • For crevices, use a short blast of compressed air held 30 cm away
  • Work top to bottom so loosened dust falls away

Step 2 — Removing Fingerprints and Oils

Fingerprints contain oils that bond with varnish over time, especially in warm rooms:

  • Dampen a microfibre cloth very slightly — barely moist, not wet
  • Gently dab (don't rub) the affected area
  • Dry immediately with a second clean, dry microfibre cloth

Step 3 — Deep Cleaning Recesses

For grime in deep recesses (belt buckles, robe folds, between fingers):

  • Dip a cotton bud in distilled water, wring out until barely damp
  • Roll — don't drag — the cotton bud through the recess
  • Follow immediately with a dry cotton bud

What NOT to Do

  • Never use alcohol — it dissolves most varnishes and lifts paint
  • Never use detergent or soap — surfactants seep under the varnish layer
  • Never submerge — resin is waterproof but paint seams are not
  • Never use paper towels — microscopically abrasive
  • Never use UV sanitiser devices — UV accelerates paint fading

How Often to Clean

In a glass-front cabinet: light dusting every 3–4 months. On open shelves: monthly dry dusting, damp clean every 6 months. Consistent light maintenance beats infrequent deep cleaning every time.
